GENERAL TIPS ON MIRROR FEATURE IN SOLIDWORKS

The mirror feature is a very common feature in solidworks. As the normal use of a mirror which is creating an identical image of what is in front of it, the mirror feature in solidworks has slight similarities.

The mirror in solidworks make the image in the opposite direction, this feature is very useful when drawing symmetrical components because instead of draw same thing twice it automatically produces the second half of the component to complete the component.

The mirror feature can be used to mirror sketches, in the component section and the assembly section of solidworks.

How to use the mirror feature when sketching a components

First draw half of the required shape and make a reference line in the middle of the shape. An example of s shape is given below with the reference line indicated with a red arrow. Now locate the mirror tool on the top menu without exiting the sketch.

The picture above the red arrow points on the reference line, the blue lines are the entities to me mirrored while the yellow lines are the mirrored lines.

How to use the mirror feature on components with features

After clicking on this its properties opens on the left menu. In mirroring in component depending on the complexity of your components would decide the property of the mirror tool to be used For less complex components

Select the face to be mirrored and the feature to be mirrored like the picture given below

In this picture we have selected the extrude boss to be mirrored on the right face More complex components .

In this case maybe we have a complex shape with so many curves and extrudes. We have to create a plane to replace the face to be mirrored to achieve a duplicate of the component.

Example of making a crankshaft

Starting by making the first half
Clicking on the mirror entities
Selecting the plane 1 as the face

The result of this would be similar to the image below
