Freeze Feature in SolidWorks

Making simpler geometries in SolidWorks and rebuilding them from time to time has no disadvantage, as simpler geometry takes no more than 5 seconds to update.

 

But what if we create something more complicated like an automobile? Which will have about 300 features to rebuild, every time it will take up to 2-3 minutes to rebuild.

 

You can freeze features to exclude the frozen features from rebuilds of the model.

 

The freeze bar controls the point at which a part’s FeatureManager design tree rebuilds. Features above the freeze bar are frozen – you cannot edit them, and they are excluded from rebuilds of the model.

 

So this will help us in times when modelling complicated designs and will save us a lot of time.

 

Freezing a portion of a model can be useful if you work with complex models with many features. Freezing the features helps to:
Reduce rebuild time
Prevent unintentional changes to the model

 

TIP: Feature Freeze prevents the geometry of frozen features from being rebuilt. However, you might still experience long rebuild times due to other processes that are not addressed by Feature Freeze.

Let’s consider this model as our specimen to understand featurefreeze feature in SolidWorks.

 

This model has about 70 features which will be rebuild over and over again, wasting about 30 seconds each time it will rebuild. So to prevent this, we will use feature freeze.

Open solidworks in assembly mode and open the saved assembly.

These are some of the features of the model seeing the varying feature type and no. of features, it is bit complicated model.

 

When configuration of the model were changed, it took some time to rebuild 69 features.

 

There is another tool which lets us to find out the rebuild time taken by the software to load graphics and process the changes in model.

To know the rebuild time, go to features-> feature statistics.

 

In feature statistics, a dialog box will pop up which will have all the information about rebuild, including the rebuild time.

As indicated in the alongside screenshot, 25.66 seconds were taken to rebuild this model and this model is not even that complicated, more complicated models require minutes of rebuild time.

This orange line is known as freeze line.

 

You can drag this freeze line up and down to select the features to freeze.

Next, go to the last feature that you want to freeze-> right click on it-> click on freeze.

 

Now all the features above the freeze line are now in freeze mode. That is these will not be rebuilt until forced.

Before freeze feature is applied, solidworks will rebuild the configurations one last time.

Again opening feature statistics, we can see that the time has been reduced to 0 seconds.

 

Thus saving us a lot of time.

Now, changing configurations does not take any time.
