Costing enhancements in new SolidWorks 2016

Costing feature in solidworks 2016 has a lot of minor updates as well as some feature upgrades.

 

Now you can see preview of expanded sheet metal in the graphics area.

 

There are also some major updates like, now solidworks automatically figures out which part is bought, machined or made by sheet metal process and calculates the cost without letting the user worry about defining processes for each part in an assembly.

We will be finding out cost of this assembly while understanding new features in solidworks 2016.
 
As you can see that the above assembly has a no. of parts, one of the part uses sheet metal process.

Right click on the part to open it separately and study it for estimating the cost.
 
Click on costing on the tools menu.
 
This tab for costing operations will appear.
 
As you can see solidworks has automatically set the method to sheet metal.
 
Costing template is selected as solidworks 2016, you can upload your own template too.
 
To edit the current set template, go to ‘launch template editor.

In solidworks 2016, you can also select the sheet size for sheet metal process.
 
Selecting different sheet size will make a considerable change in costing. This will also change the no. of sheets required for making the sheet metal part. This feature is newly introduced in solidworks 2016.

There is one more new option in this tool, bounding box offset this displays expanded sheet metal, previously this feature was available but it did not show any preview.
 
Using this we can also provide allowances to our part.
 
This also displays final sheet area per part.

Let’s study about the hole operations feature, this tool shows the method of performing the hole.

It automatically makes all hole in sheet metal as drilled holes.

In our part, there are holes of larger diameter, the selected one has dia. Of 26mm.
 
As 26mm drill is not available, therefore let’s change the method of performing the hole from drilling to milling.
 
Solidworks also displays error on the part which have its tool missing.

Right click on the part, select change to mill.

Now, you can just drag the arrows to provide allowances.
 
Blue shaded region shows the allowances.

Custom operations can also be added to a part, for example, if zinc plating is selected, it will increase the total costing of the part and apply this custom operation.

With new solidworks 2016, the task of estimating cost has become easier as user does not have to apply cost manually to majority of operations.
 
You can also edit the template.

This contains all costing data which can be manually edited for any changes.

Template editor also lets you see the rules applied.
 
These rules are useful. For e.g. if a hole is given milling operation instead of drilling because of its larger diameter, then solidworks will automatically apply milling operation to all holes having larger diameter.

After saving this report, you can open it by going to features menu and opening the design binder.

Costing report Is saved in docx format.
 
This format can be run on Microsoft word.
